How to Become Vegan

“Vegan? Well, it’s easy isn’t it? Just stop eating meat.” This is the common misconception when it comes down to Veganism. People believe it is just a more advanced form of Vegetarianism. However, if we look closer at the fundamentals behind Veganism we can see that this is not the case.

It seems there is a lot of pressure within modern society about our diversity amongst dietary requirements. People feel inclined to change their diet in order to impress someone or try to show off a particular personality trait? In truth, we have no right to tell you “How to become Vegan” as there are no rules forced upon you when you decide to become Vegan, it’s all down to YOUR choice. However, we aim to provide an educational platform regarding various diets, therefore if you are wondering the best way to transition to a Vegan diet then you’ve come to the right place!

Very few people on the planet eat the exact same foods at the exact same times. Therefore, everyone adopts a Vegan diet from different situations - so don’t worry if you struggle in the first couple of weeks, the key is consistency. We assume you have a fairly basic understanding of a Vegan diet, otherwise how will you know if you want to do it? A Vegan diet cuts out all products which have been taken from or contain animals. There may be various reasons for your interest in Veganism - ranging from health reasons to your love of animals. It is likely that the importance of your reason will directly correlate to the effort you'll require to switch diets. This brings us to our first point, to adopt a Vegan lifestyle you must have a strong reason to do so. Your reason results in your motivation, this drives you to commit to this change and you are more likely to succeed. So define your why before you do anything else. (If you are struggling to do this then check out our other posts on the environmental and health benefits of going Vegan)

You may be in the situation where your why has already been defined but you are still unsure of the route you should take. In other terms, you now want to understand how you can become Vegan. If you are 100% committed to becoming Vegan then you must become educated. You can do this by checking out our other posts or even better try and find someone who is Vegan and ask them about their experience.

After you have become educated it is time to put it into practise. We have come up with a few helpful tips which may help you with this:

  • Before you start taking away from your diet, add to it. Experiment with some Vegan products before becoming completely dependent on them. Don’t get disheartened if you first experiment is a failure - as we said, the key is commitment!

  • We mentioned earlier that people get confused between Vegetarianism and Veganism, this is because they are very similar. If you become Vegan you automatically become a Vegetarian. Therefore, we recommend you try adopting a Vegetarian lifestyle before switching to Veganism.

  • Our final tip is to plan. Write a list of all the foods you currently eat and split them into two groups: Vegan and Non-Vegan. Go through the products in the Non-Vegan group and remove those which you can live without from your diet. Then see what else you can add to the Vegan group. Keep adding and taking away and before you know it you are Vegan!

Changing diet can be hard, but don’t be afraid, change starts with small steps. Just stay patient and be excited to try new things. You’ve got this!
